What do you believe about stewardship? Part 2
In Part One of “What Do You Believe About Stewardship” we considered stewardship in light of the ownership of God—I am the creation of God and I am made in the image of God. Now let’s look closer at what it means to be a steward or manager. As Genesis 1:26 makes clear those who are made “in the image of God” are to “subdue and rule” over the rest of creation of God. We are given the task of managing the creation of God. That management was done in the context of relationship with God—as created to Creator and as image of God to God.

What do you believe about stewardship? Part 1
Spoiler alert: this is one of my most embarrassing ministry moments!
About thirty years ago, I was attending my first meeting with state convention stewardship leaders. After hearing presentations on various stewardship programs to offer to our churches, one of the more seasoned leaders asked me, “So, Stan, what are you going to do to help your churches in the area of stewardship?”

Obstacles to engaging my community: Part 2
In Part One of this article, I identified two obstacles that impact how I am engaging my community with the Gospel. First, am I waiting/longing for things to return to “normal”? Second, am I only listening to those voices that reinforce what I already think? This article identifies three more obstacles.

Obstacles to engaging my community: Part 1
In a recent email this caught my eye “your experience . . . caught our attention . . .your skill set, and background mirror our current franchise owners.” I was intrigued, so I kept reading.
What was the franchise offer that they thought would connect with my values and interests? Owning and managing a boxing for fitness franchise! This sounds like a great idea and a great platform for physical fitness, but there is nothing about me that makes one think of boxing! It was like they were speaking a foreign language to me.

Church finances during a pandemic
Many churches have experienced extraordinary giving amidst the pandemic. Instead of retreat, some churches saw generosity. Why? Because people experienced at a very personal level the purpose for which the church exists — worship in a caring community that models love and compassion. Pastors and other church leaders took initiative to serve their communities. They led by example. The actions of the church were driven by a commitment to the Kingdom of God. Church leaders explored every possible platform to continue engaging in worship, Bible study and community building.
Everybody needs somebody sometime
Back in the 90s, Western Union ran a hilarious ad to the tune “Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime.” In the commercial a sushi chef chopping up a cucumber also chops up a man’s credit card. The man calls a friend to send him money via Western Union. Though this commercial hits a comedic tone, the song is a very powerful statement of an important truth. It applies not just when you have lost your credit card but also throughout life.

Observations on preaching to an empty room
While many pastors are becoming adept at preaching to an empty church auditorium during this COVID-19 pandemic, I had my first experience recently. Let me share a few observations that may encourage you. (Or maybe YOU will want to encourage me!)

Open your eyes
I wear trifocals. I joke that this means I cannot see in any direction! But there is seeing and there is “seeing.”
