Advent: Preparing Our Hearts for Christ’s Coming
Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation, observed during the four weeks leading up to Christmas. While it may not always be a formal part of Baptist tradition, its rich meaning and focus on Christ make it a season worth embracing. The word Advent comes from the Latin adventus, meaning “coming” or “arrival,” and it reminds us to reflect on the coming of Jesus Christ—past, present, and future.
Jesus Versus the Church?
There is a rumor going around that Jesus doesn’t much like the church. He is sort of annoyed with his bride, or outright disgusted by her. Some might even suggest a breakup. This perceived animosity has led people to the conclusion they can love Jesus and hate the church.
Words Worth Repeating
Let’s see if this sounds familiar: “But what if I’m not really saved? The fear of finding out too late that I used the wrong words or didn’t fully understand or committed too little is paralyzing. I should probably pray again, just to be safe.”
Spring Cleaning
Invasion. It was what described the state of our apartment a few weeks ago. Moths were slowly overtaking our living space until we finally found the source of the problem—a bag of forgotten dates in the corner of our kitchen. Let’s just say the bag was moving.
Why Christ’s Sacrifice Matters Even to Nonbelievers
The story is told of a minister who had two little children. His youngest daughter asked him one Sunday after church why he always said a prayer right before he preached. Impressed that his daughter was actually paying attention to what was going on in the service, he solemnly told her that he always prayed before the sermon to ask God to bless the sermon and make it both inspiring and encouraging to the audience. After a moment of silence, the little girl spoke up again. She said, “Daddy, why doesn’t God ever answer that prayer?”
Sunday’s Coming
This year my longing for Easter is greater than ever before. I don’t necessarily mean Sunday, April 9th. I mean a longing for healing and peace for our world that is only made possible through the resurrection. I mean a greater appreciation for Christ’s gift of salvation.
Inviting Jesus
A few years ago, a popular YouTube channel made a series of videos which highlighted the struggles of poverty among the elderly community in South Korea. The host of the show noted that it had been hard to find people to talk to on camera as many feared “losing face,” worried of what their family and friends would think of them following the interview.
