WORLD HUNGER: It's time to get personal

Hunger is no respecter of geography or ethnic group. It can be felt in an apartment in Eastern Europe, a cardboard shack in Central America, a tent in the Sahara, or a house in Vermont.

Southern Baptist missionaries and volunteers are offering nourishment for the body and soul. And every Southern Baptist can have a part in those ministries through gifts to the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund.

While Christ-followers, including Southern Baptists, are doing something about hunger in the U.S. and around the world, we could be doing a lot more. In fact, we can be assured that God expects us to do much more. He expects us to demonstrate an urgency to pray, to give, and to minister on behalf of those who are hungry--both physically and spiritually.

When will you get personal about hunger? If we take God's Word seriously and observe the financial pressures in our nation today, then malnourished and hungry people are our problem. Those who are afflicted were made in the image of God. He cares about them, which means we are to care about their welfare as well.

VIDEOS FOR PROMOTING THE OFFERING:

  • BCNE HUNGER VIDEO FOR DOWNLOAD-  (about 21 MB- 3 minutes) Great glimpse of real faces of domestic hunger.
  • MIRACLE MEAL (link to NAMB website for free download)- Jesus fed thousands with one small snack. Today, God still works miracles with meals. In this video, see how Jesus used a sandwich to change a homeless crack addict into a sober, saved missions volunteer. The hunger ministry was made possible by New York's East Seventh Street Baptist Church/Graffiti Community Ministries, located in Manhattan's lower east side. The congregation is led by NAMB missionary Taylor Field.

Ways You Can Help

Give Directly to the World Hunger Fund

Please be aware that there is a critical need for replenishing SBC World Hunger funds! World Hunger funds are used solely to distribute food in Jesus’ name through approved food ministries and by Southern Baptist state, North American and international missionaries.

100% of ALL monies donated go directly to food for hungry people!

Many of our churches fail to keep in mind and promote our international and North American hunger relief fund in preference for para-church ministries that attempt to do the same. There are key issues for impacting hungry people through the love of Christ Jesus in the support of this fund that must be remembered, promoted and supported:

  • This is unlike any other secular or ministry agencies taking donations for hunger. This offering is not used for administrative or personnel costs- 100% of this offering is used at the point of need.
  • These funds are delivered directly from NAMB or BGR to hunger ministries through our state convention office, or missionaries at the point of need.
  • The need in North America and globally has been increasing so our offerings need to increase as well.
  • In 2009, the World Hunger Fund provided 4.6 million meals in North America through churches and Southern Baptist hunger relief ministries. More than 36,000 professions of faith were reported.

How Is My Dollar Spent?

When a dollar is contributed to the Southern Baptist World Hunger Fund, the offering will be divided 85% to the International Mission Board for overseas hunger projects while 15% is sent to the North American Mission Board to support hunger projects in the United States (which includes New England) and Canada. Because personnel and volunteers are already in place, and promotional expenses come through other budgets... 100% of your gift is used to minister to the hungry in Jesus’ name.

How to Give…

We encourage churches to collect through the whole month of October or specifically on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011. Churches designate their collection to the "World Hunger Fund" in a separate check sent with their regular CP giving. If you are a member of a Southern Baptist church, make your World Hunger Fund gift by placing it in the offering plate of your church with "World Hunger Fund" on your check or offering envelope.

When your offering is received, please mail a check to:
